ROBIN WALTON- Individual Profile
What are you currently working on?
Goosebumps the Musical: Phantom of the Auditorium. It's written by the same team that did Fancy Nancy, The Musical
Chance Theater, October 4-27
(I may or may not be the phantom!)
What's been inspiring you recently?
Recently, when I'm not performing or writing, I've been reading a lot of plays. Right now, I'm about 25% through the complete works of Neil Simon. So look for some comedy in my next writing efforts!
Tell us a story from your childhood that illuminates who you are as an artist.
I was a boy-actor in an hostile environment in a small town in Texas during the 70's, but I had the complete support of not only the speech and drama teachers and students, but the principal as well. I not only did the morning announcements, but was an announcer for the football team over the radio. I was also very active in the local community theater, which allowed me to keep my sanity.
Time in Greater Orange County:
Unincorporated Orange County
My father was a pilot in the Air Force.
I grew up all over the south.
What kind of theatre excites you?
Although the trend is toward important and bold topics taking on the themes that need to be addressed, my favorites are still the old-fashioned entertaining musicals. Maybe because I am an old-fashioned and entertaining guy!
Who are or were your theatrical heroes?
Keri Hayter is the best director I've ever worked with and whenever I see something she has directed, I learn stuff.
What's the craziest thing you have ever needed to do for theatre?
In college, I was Nana the dog in Peter Pan, the straight play. One Saturday morning the director got a call from John Darling's mother. He had a 104 fever and would not be going on. I had about 3 hours of notice and I went on as a 12-year-old boy. I'm sure most of the audience didn't even notice!
Outside of a theatre, what's your favorite hot spot in Orange County?
My backyard! Pool, jacuzzi, fruit trees, birds, butterflies and my two dogs!
What advice do you have for theatre artists just starting out in Orange County?
Be professional at all times. "Someone is always watching." Never, never, never stop chasing your dream!
