What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on several projects! (When aren't we working?) I am writing my most recent book on translational research (never mind...that's a subject for a different day), and doing voiceover work to keep me busy.

What's been inspiring you recently?

The brilliant direction and writing in "The Money Heist" on Netflix. Stellar acting and superb storytelling.

Tell us a story from your childhood that illuminates who you are as an artist.

In 3rd grade, I choreographed and played the lead girl (Clara) in my elementary school's production of "The Nutcracker." Aside from embarrassing my mother because she sent me to school with a "ratty 'ol robe and slippers" for the production (she didn't think the show was being presented to the entire school and parents), this experience whet my appetite for live theatre. This led me to start a drama club in 7th grade because my school did not have one and the rest is history. I have tried to be involved in theatre in some fashion throughout most of my life.

What kind of theatre excites you?

Intimate, powerful, dramatic theatrical experiences have a kind of cosmic pull for me. But, a few years ago I saw "The Play that Goes Wrong" and I could have watched it a million times. Musicals such as "Come from Away" and "Next to Normal" are also amazing.

Who are or were your theatrical heroes?

Oh so many. Mark Rylance for his incredibly nuanced and inspired Broadway performances including "Jerusalem" and "Richard III," Jeff Daniels' performances in "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "God of Carnage," Cate Blanchett in "Streetcar Named Desire" and "Carol," everything done by Helen Mirren, and--of course--Kristin Chenoweth for representing short blonde women everywhere.

What's the craziest thing you have ever needed to do for theatre?

Perform in a theater (a renovated barn) on the top of a hill during a tornado!

Outside of a theatre, what's your favorite hot spot in Orange County?

Walking my 3 dogs in OC Parks or Huntington Dog Beach.

What surprises you the most about your role in the theatre community?

How lovely and generous most individuals are in this community. When moving here a few years ago I had massive assumptions about how cutthroat the theatre community would be. I have not found that to be the case at all.

What advice do you have for theatre artists just starting out in Orange County?

Payment for your efforts is not always in money. Most OC Theatre does not pay or does not pay much, but you get to practice your craft, indulge in your passion, tell important stories, and have fun along the way!
