What's Hitting the Stage in May

There’s something about May that feels like a reset—the days stretch a little longer, the air softens, and suddenly a night out sounds a lot more appealing than another evening at home. It’s the perfect moment to trade your routine for something live, immediate, and a little bit magical.

This month, stages across Orange County are bursting with stories that couldn’t be more different from one another—which means there’s truly something for every mood you’re in. Craving a clever mystery? Murder on the Orient Express delivers intrigue and glamour. Want something bright, bold, and unapologetically fun? You’ve have Legally Blonde the Musical. Maybe you’re in the mood for nostalgia and powerhouse vocals with Jerry’s Girls, or a visually imaginative take on classics like The Little Mermaid and The Birds.

If you’re drawn to thought-provoking, contemporary storytelling, productions like Sanctuary City, Saint Vegas, and Fremont Ave. offer deeply human stories that linger long after the curtain call. Prefer something playful and fast-paced? The 39 Steps brings theatrical ingenuity and humor in spades. And for those looking for something a little off the beaten path, Tristan and Yseult promises a unique, evocative experience.

There are also special, one-night-only performances—perfect for a spontaneous night out—like Because You’re Mine: The Music of June Carter and Johnny Cash and Cowgirl Katarungan’s Recipe for Adobo, blending music, storytelling, and culture into unforgettable evenings.

Whether you’re planning a date night, catching up with friends, or just carving out a little time for yourself, live theatre offers something you can’t stream or scroll past: a shared experience, happening right in front of you, just for that moment.

So take a break from the everyday. Try something new. Support local artists. And let yourself be surprised—you might just find your new favorite night out.
